LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. — A search effort off the coast of Little Compton was suspended Saturday afternoon after hours of intense rescue operations failed to locate two missing fishermen.
Authorities were first called to the area near Warren’s Point Beach Club around 8:30 a.m. after reports of a person in distress in the water. According to officials, two brothers, ages 27 and 31, from Stoughton, Massachusetts, were fishing when one of them fell in. The other jumped in to help, followed by a third man who also entered the water in an attempt to assist. That third individual was pulled to safety by a lifeguard and a rescue swimmer.
Multiple agencies responded, including the Little Compton Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, and marine units from Middletown, Tiverton, Newport, and Cranston. Crews conducted both land and maritime searches throughout the day.
By 3:30 p.m., the search was officially called off for the evening. Local officials are expected to meet again to determine if the search will continue on Sunday, depending on weather conditions.
The two missing fishermen have not yet been located.
