EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island health officials have confirmed the West Nile Virus has been found locally in 2025. The virus was detected in a mosquito sample collected in East Providence on July 21, according to a joint announcement from the Department of Environmental Management and the Department of Health.

So far, there have been no detections of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or Jamestown Canyon Virus in the state.

West Nile Virus, a mosquito-borne illness, can cause flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, and fatigue. While most cases are mild, it can lead to serious complications in some individuals.

Right over the border, officials in Attleboro, Massachusetts, also confirmed a positive West Nile mosquito sample this week.

Residents are urged to take precautions:

– Wear insect repellent with DEET

– Avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk

– Eliminate standing water around homes

Stay safe and stay protected because mosquito season isn’t over yet.
