CRANSTON, R.I. — These are photos from a 1940s Saint Mary’s Feast, a celebration honoring Maria Santissima della Civita, has been a beloved tradition in Cranston’s Knightsville neighborhood since 1905. It was brought to Rhode Island by Italian immigrants from Itri, Italy, who carried their devotion, and a centuries-old story of faith, across the Atlantic.
These photographs from the 1940s capture the spirit of the feast in its earlier years, when streets came alive with music, food, and a strong sense of community.
This weekend marks the 120th anniversary of the festival, which remains dedicated to the Madonna della Civita, whose veneration began in 796 AD after a miraculous event in the hills of Itri. What began as a small religious observance has grown into one of Rhode Island’s most cherished cultural celebrations.
The event goes from Thursday, July 17 until Sunday July 20 at 15 Phenix Avenue in Cranston, Rhode Island. There will be Italian food, rides, lives music, fireworks, and more.
This is one of the many Italian feasts held in Rhode Island, with the 46th annual Saint Anthony’s Feast being held in June.
