The Rhode Island Department of Health is warning of a recent spike in overdoses in Providence.
According to health officials, 20 people were treated in emergency departments for drug overdoses over the past 7 days in Providence alone. The city continues to report the highest overdose rate in the state, with numbers reaching up to twice the statewide average.
The last overdose alert was issued March 10 and affected Region 7, which includes Cranston, and Region 1, which includes Burrillville, Foster, Glocester, and Scituate.
Officials say spikes like this can happen as the drug supply continues to change, with fentanyl and other powerful substances now being found in a wide range of drugs, including heroin, cocaine, and counterfeit pills.
The alert is being issued to raise awareness and encourage people to take precautions, access treatment, and utilize recovery resources.
Health officials are reminding residents that free naloxone is available across Rhode Island, and support services are open for anyone who may need help.
Anyone experiencing a crisis or concerned about someone else can call or text 988 to reach trained counselors for immediate support.
