CANTON, O.H. — Two legends from the New England Patriots dynasty are officially one step closer to Canton.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its five finalists today, with former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and longtime team owner Robert Kraft both making the cut. Belichick is being considered in the coach category, while Kraft is up for induction as a contributor.
Also named finalists in the seniors category were Ken Anderson, Roger Craig, and L.C. Greenwood.
A 50-person selection committee will vote on the group, with candidates needing 80% support to be inducted. Members can select up to three finalists, and at least one person is guaranteed to be elected.
Belichick, hired by Kraft in 2000, built one of the greatest dynasties in sports history with six Super Bowl titles, nine AFC championships, and 333 career wins, second only to Don Shula. Before joining New England, he earned two rings as the Giants’ defensive coordinator.
Kraft, who purchased the Patriots in 1994, oversaw 10 Super Bowl appearances, the most by any owner in league history, and played a major role in shaping modern NFL policies, including helping resolve the 2011 lockout.
Hall of Fame selections will be announced early next year.
