BOSTON, M.A. — The Boston Bruins paid tribute to the victims of the deadly shooting at Brown University before taking the ice Tuesday night at TD Garden.

Ahead of their matchup against the Utah Mammoth, Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy arrived wearing a Brown Bears sweatshirt in a visible show of solidarity with the Providence campus. The team also displayed a custom Bruins jersey near their bench featuring the words “Brown Univ” and “401,” Rhode Island’s area code, honoring the victims and the wider community affected by the tragedy.

The shooting, which occurred Saturday on the Ivy League campus, left two students dead and nine students injured. Brown University is located roughly 50 miles south of Boston.

The impact of the tragedy was felt across the NHL. Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis shared that his son, Ryan, a Brown student and member of the university’s hockey team, was on campus at the time of the shooting but was unharmed. Ryan was sheltering in place while the Canadiens were playing at Madison Square Garden.

“It’s a tragedy, it hit home,” St. Louis said during the press conference. “My thoughts and prayers are with the students, the families, and the entire Brown community. Stuff like that shouldn’t happen.”

The Bruins’ gesture served as a moment of recognition and respect, extending support from Boston to Providence during a difficult time.
