UPDATE: Coventry Police say a person of interest was detained at the Hampton Inn in Coventry around 3:45 a.m.

COVENTRY, R.I. — Authorities say a person of interest has been detained in connection with the deadly shooting on the Brown University campus Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say a gunman entered Barus and Holley, an engineering building near Thayer Street, around 4 p.m. as students were studying for final exams. Multiple students were shot during the incident.

Police confirmed two students were killed and at least nine others were injured. Brown University President Christina Paxson said all 11 victims were students. As of early Sunday morning, several victims remain in critical but stable condition, while one student was treated and released. The victims’ identities have not yet been released.

The university and surrounding Providence neighborhoods were placed under a shelter-in-place order for several hours as police and first responders conducted an extensive search.

President Donald Trump addressed the shooting while leaving the Army–Navy football game in Baltimore, calling the incident tragic and urging prayer.

“What a terrible thing it is,” Trump said. “And all we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt… It’s a shame. It’s a shame. Just pray.”

Officials are expected to provide additional details during a 7 a.m. briefing Sunday.

This is a developing story.
