SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Bryant University has been listed as a potential training site for teams competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Rhode Island officials, FIFA included the Smithfield campus in its official base camp brochure, which highlights facilities where international teams can practice.
Gillette Stadium in Foxboro is slated to host seven matches during the tournament, one of 16 stadiums across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico selected as venues.
Earlier this year, Rhode Island launched Ocean State 2026, a nonprofit created to help the state capitalize on the economic opportunities tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Elizabeth Tanner subsequently stepped down as Rhode Island Secretary of Commerce to lead the organization.
The nonprofit aims to position Rhode Island as a key player in the international tournament, which is expected to bring more than one million visitors through the Providence metro area. The seven matches scheduled at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro are projected to generate more than $330 million in regional economic activity.
State and university leaders are expected to share more details about Bryant’s potential role at a news conference on Friday.
