LINCOLN, R.I. — Authorities are investigating a fatal wrong-way collision that occurred early Sunday and claimed the lives of three people, two of whom were students at Bryant University.

According to police, the crash took place shortly after midnight on Route 146 northbound in Lincoln. A Ford pickup traveling the wrong way in the high-speed lane struck a Chevrolet Tahoe head-on.

Police identified the pickup’s driver as 41-year-old Denis Aguilar Campos of Chelsea, Massachusetts. The Tahoe was operated by Jaylin Rainford, 20, of Randolph, Massachusetts, with 20-year-old Chiemelie David Okonkwo of Lawrenceville, Georgia, riding as a passenger.

Emergency responders pronounced all three individuals dead at the scene.

Bryant University President Ross Gittell later confirmed that Rainford and Okonkwo were enrolled at the university. Rainford was also an athlete on the school’s track and field team.
