Dead whale washes ashore at Bold Point Park in East Providence

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A whale carcass was discovered along the shoreline of Bold Point Park early Sunday morning, prompting an investigation by state and marine authorities.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), a report came in around 8 a.m. regarding the dead whale. The agency has since contacted Mystic Aquarium to assist in determining the cause of death.

East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva addressed the situation in a social media post, stating:
“A very putrid smelling whale carcass washed up on the shore of Bold Point Park. The RI DEM was notified and Mystic Aquarium was notified to investigate cause of death.”

Officials have not yet released details on the species or size of the whale. An examination by marine biologists is expected to follow.
