PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A man is facing federal charges after authorities say he transported a large amount of drugs into Rhode Island on an Amtrak train.
Authorities say Gabriel Penta, 31, traveled from New York to Providence with more than 500 grams of methamphetamine and is now charged with possession with intent to deliver.
According to court documents, law enforcement began tracking the suspect after receiving information about a planned drug delivery by Amtrak rail. Prior to the suspect’s trip, authorities reviewed his travel itinerary and flagged several booking patterns they say are commonly linked to illicit travel.
When the train reached the station, officers approached the suspect and conducted a search of his belongings. Investigators say they discovered multiple bags containing substances that tested positive for methamphetamine and cocaine.
Officials said the amount recovered was significant and indicative of drug trafficking. The suspect was taken into custody and now faces charges related to possession with intent to distribute.
Court records also indicate the man allegedly used a false identity while booking travel and may have attempted to conceal his movements by repeatedly changing train reservations prior to the trip.
The case remains under federal investigation.
