JAMESTOWN, R.I. — Traffic headaches are continuing on the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge as construction work by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) is causing major backups and a rough ride for drivers heading across the span.
Currently, joint repairs are taking place on the westbound side of the bridge, where contractors are replacing several bridge joints and reducing traffic to a single lane during active construction.
Raised steel plates covering the joints have created significant bumps across the roadway, with traffic at times stretching nearly the entire length of the bridge and delays reportedly reaching close to an hour on some days.
The work zone speed limit is 25 miles per hour, but drivers are urged to slow down even further while crossing the raised steel plates. Hitting the plates at higher speeds could potentially cause serious front-end damage to vehicles.
Both lanes are expected to reopen when crews are not actively working, but drivers should continue preparing for weekday delays throughout the summer of 2026.
Once work on the westbound side is completed, crews will shift construction operations to the eastbound span.
