PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) will honor the late Judge Frank Caprio during its 2026 commencement with a posthumous Honorary Associate in Arts degree.
For the first time, CCRI will award honorary degrees at its graduation ceremony on May 12 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. Among those recognized will be Caprio, who will receive a degree for his lifetime of public service and commitment to education.
Caprio, who served for decades on the Providence Municipal Court, became widely known for his compassionate and empathetic approach to justice. His courtroom gained international attention through the television program Caught in Providence, where his fairness and humanity resonated with audiences around the world.
Born and raised in Providence to Italian immigrant parents, Caprio was the first in his family to graduate from college and earn a law degree while working to support his family.
Beyond the courtroom, he also played a significant role in higher education, serving as chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education for 10 years. During that time, he helped shape policy for the state’s public colleges and universities, including CCRI.
A strong advocate for expanding access to education, Caprio established scholarships to support students pursuing higher education and community service. His legacy, both in the courtroom and in the community, continues to reflect a deep commitment to fairness, opportunity, and compassion.
College officials say the introduction of honorary degrees is meant to recognize individuals whose lives and work align with CCRI’s mission and values, making Caprio a fitting choice for the inaugural honor.
