PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Joseph Abbate, a longtime Rhode Island administrative magistrate, has passed away at 74.
Abbate built a career in public service that spanned decades, earning recognition for his work within the state’s judicial system. He was appointed as an administrative magistrate by Paul A. Suttell, Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, on March 20, 2018. His appointment carried a 10-year term.
A Rhode Island native with deep ties to the community, Abbate was a graduate of Providence College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He later obtained his law degree from Suffolk University Law School in Massachusetts.
During his time on the bench, Abbate was known for his professionalism, legal knowledge. Friends and colleagues describe him as a dedicated public servant committed to fairness and the rule of law.
