NEWPORT, R.I. — Maria Sharapova was officially inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame Class of 2025 in Newport, Rhode Island. The moment became even more unforgettable when Serena Williams made a surprise early appearance to deliver the honor. The two fierce rivals turned friends embraced, bringing full circle a rivalry that spanned more than a decade.

Sharapova’s career included five Grand Slam titles and a place among only 10 women to complete the career Grand Slam. Her rivalry with Serena stretched back to her shocking 2004 Wimbledon victory at age 17, followed by 21 more meetings where Serena dominated, winning 20, including three major finals and the 2012 Olympic gold medal.

Serena: “Whatever her weakness was the match before, you better believe that was her strength next time. She was relentless about improving.”

Sharapova: “We both hated to lose more than anything. Serena did more than sharpen my game, she helped crystallize my identity as a competitor.”

Also enshrined yesterday were legendary doubles identical twin brothers Bob & Mike Bryan, honored for their 16 Grand Slam titles, Olympic gold, and record 438 weeks ranked No. 1 as a team. They ended their speech with their signature chest bump to a standing ovation.

The ceremony drew a star-studded crowd of tennis greats, including Martina Navratilova, Jim Courier, Stan Smith, and Andy Roddick, all wearing their Hall of Fame blue blazers as they welcomed the newest members.

From rivals to allies, Sharapova and Serena’s embrace, alongside the Bryan Brothers’ celebration, showed why Newport remains the place where tennis legacies live forever. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, will be eligible for her own enshrinement in 2027.
