NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — A North Kingstown police officer was seriously injured Friday night during an undercover sting targeting child exploitation.
Authorities say 30-year-old Alec Perry of Pawtucket believed he was meeting a 13-year-old girl, but he had actually been communicating with an undercover investigator.
The sting was carried out by a task force involving Rhode Island State Police, the FBI, North Kingstown Police, the Attorney General’s Special Victims Unit, and NCIS.
When Perry arrived at the Park and Ride lot in North Kingstown, officers moved in to arrest him. That’s when the situation escalated. Perry allegedly attempted to flee, accelerating his car and striking a North Kingstown detective.
Other officers on the scene fired at the vehicle. While it’s unclear if any bullets hit the car or suspect, at least six evidence markers were visible at the scene. Perry crashed nearby and briefly fled on foot before being arrested. The vehicle had a shattered rear window.
The injured officer was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and has since been released.
Perry is facing 10 charges including indecent solicitation of a child, felony assault, assault on an officer, eluding police, and resisting arrest. He’s also facing a probation violation for prior convictions, including first-degree robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle.
The incident is now under review under Rhode Island’s officer-involved shooting protocols.
