Police identify woman killed in pedestrian crash on Scituate Ave.

CRANSTON, R.I. — Officials have identified the victim in a deadly pedestrian crash that occurred in Cranston over the weekend.

Vaune Vacarro, 56, was killed early Sunday after being struck by a vehicle in the breakdown lane on Scituate Avenue. Police reported that first responders encountered her with critical injuries, and she was pronounced dead a short time later despite emergency medical efforts.

Investigators arrested 30-year-old Richard D’Amico in connection with the incident, alleging that he fled without alerting authorities. Police said there is no record showing he contacted 911 or otherwise reported the crash.

According to officers, Vacarro’s relatives told them they had not been in touch with her for years and characterized her as transient, noting she had lived in states including Florida, California, Colorado, New York, Virginia and Massachusetts.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident as well as why Vacarro was in that area at the time of the collision.
