PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A pro-Palestine rally at DePasquale Square in Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood, drew demonstrators Thursday afternoon.
Dozens gathered near the fountain with flags, signs, and chants in support of Palestine. This is one of many demonstrations that has taken place across the state.
This comes two months after protests against the Palestinian flag being raised above Providence City Hall.
After the raising, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley issued an executive order tightening the city’s flag display policy at City Hall.
Under the new guidelines, only flags that reflect the official sentiments of the city may be flown. Flags representing foreign governments recognized by the United States can be displayed, but only through a mayoral proclamation or a resolution approved by the City Council, and for no more than 24 hours unless otherwise specified.
The policy also allows for “other flags” to be flown at official city events or ceremonies, subject to the same approval process and time limit.
