PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Kendall Towns, a 20-year-old Providence man accused in an armed carjacking, is considered missing from home confinement after authorities say his GPS tracking device was tampered with and possibly cut off, according to court documents and a Department of Corrections report obtained by NBC 10.
Towns had been on home confinement since his May arrest, when police alleged he and another suspect carjacked a man outside 1049 Atwells Avenue during what was supposed to be a marijuana deal. The victim told officers one of the men, later identified as Towns, struck him in the head with a gun before stealing his vehicle.
According to the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, Towns was declared an “absconder” late last week after missing a scheduled check-in. Soon after, his GPS monitor sent a tampering alert, indicating it had likely been cut off.
Attempts to contact Towns, his girlfriend, and his sister all went right to voicemail, and a statewide warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Records also show Towns had remained on home confinement despite being arrested again in July, when police said he interfered with officers breaking up a large crowd outside his home. During that arrest, his GPS tracker signaled it had left his residence and was located at the Providence Police Department.
Towns is currently facing charges of first-degree robbery and felony assault related to the May carjacking.
