PROVIDENCE, R.I. Ten years ago today, former Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci Jr. passed away at the age of 74.
Cianci served as mayor of Providence from 1975 to 1984 and again from 1991 to 2002, making him the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history, holding office for more than 21 years.
Known for his larger-than-life personality, Cianci played a significant role in shaping modern Providence. His leadership helped drive downtown revitalization and the restoration of the city’s waterfront, changes that continue to define the capital city today.
At the same time, his legacy remains complicated. Both of his terms as mayor ended amid criminal convictions, and critics continue to point to corruption charges and his time in prison as part of his record.
