Remembering Vincent “Buddy” Cianci 10 tears after his passing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Today marks 10 years since the death of former Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci Jr., who passed away at the age of 74. Cianci remains one of the most famous and controversial figures in Providence history.

Cianci served as mayor of Providence during two separate periods: 1975 to 1984 and 1991 to 2002, making him the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history with more than 21 years in office. First elected in 1974, Cianci served until 1984, later returning to City Hall after winning re-election in 1990 and serving three consecutive terms from 1991 to 2002.

Known for his larger-than-life personality and charisma, Cianci played a key role in shaping modern Providence. He championed downtown revitalization, riverfront redevelopment, and historic preservation, helping transform the city into a regional hub for arts, dining, and tourism. Many of the city’s iconic landmarks and cultural improvements trace back to his leadership.

At the same time, Cianci’s legacy is complicated. Both of his mayoral tenures ended amid criminal convictions, including time in prison. Critics continue to highlight these controversies as part of his complex record.

Even a decade after his passing, Cianci’s influence is still visible across Providence. From the downtown core to the waterfront, the projects he championed continue to define the city’s landscape. Love him or hate him, Vincent “Buddy” Cianci Jr. left a mark on Providence that still shapes its identity today.
