NEWPORT, R.I. — Tennis legend Roger Federer has been elected into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his very first year of eligibility, the Hall announced this week.
Federer, widely considered one of the greatest players in tennis history, racked up 20 Grand Slam singles titles and 103 tour-level championships over his illustrious career. He also held the world No. 1 ranking for a record 237 consecutive weeks, and 310 weeks in total.
In a statement, the Swiss star expressed humility and gratitude: “It’s a tremendous honor to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and to stand alongside so many of the game’s great champions,” he said. He added that being recognized by the sport and his peers is “deeply humbling,” and he looks forward to celebrating the induction ceremony in Newport next summer.
Federer’s Hall of Fame induction is particularly significant because he was the only player in the Class of 2026 to receive enough support to be elected in the player category.
Also elected in this class is Mary Carillo, the former player turned broadcaster and journalist, honored in the contributor category.
Federer’s career achievements go beyond just winning titles. He led Switzerland to its first-ever Davis Cup victory in 2014, won an Olympic gold medal in doubles, and became a global ambassador for the sport through his elegance, sportsmanship, and longevity on tour.
This past summer Maria Sharapova was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame.
The International Tennis Hall of Fame, located in Newport, Rhode Island, is a museum and historic venue dedicated to preserving the history of tennis and celebrating the sport’s greatest champions. Founded in 1954, the Hall of Fame recognizes players, coaches, contributors, and innovators who have made a lasting impact on the game. Its campus includes a world-class museum featuring memorabilia, interactive exhibits, and archival collections, as well as the famed grass courts that host annual professional tournaments.
