BARRINGTON, R.I. — A Barrington High School social studies teacher will return to work after an investigation into his social media posts prompted the district to place him on administrative leave earlier this fall.

Teacher Benjamin Fillo was removed from the classroom in September after posting content online expressing no sympathy for conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his death. The Barrington School Committee hired outside attorney Matthew Oliverio to conduct an independent review of the incident.

Oliverio’s report concluded that Fillo violated district policies, rules and regulations. The investigation noted that Fillo admitted he did not consider how his remarks might affect students, families, or others in the school community with different views.

The School Committee announced Friday that the superintendent decided on November 20 to discipline Fillo and end his paid leave. Fillo was informed of the decision and is scheduled to return to his classroom on December 1. The district did not disclose the specifics of the disciplinary action.

Officials also addressed the wave of attention the situation has generated. According to the district, Barrington Public Schools has faced an unusual level of national scrutiny, online hostility, and safety concerns over the past two months. The district will increase police presence at all schools and enhance monitoring of incoming communication to ensure student and staff safety.

School leaders say they will work with families on class placements and provide additional counseling and mental health resources for students as Fillo transitions back to the classroom.
