Shekarchi steps down as House speaker to pursue Rhode Island Supreme Court seat

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — House Speaker Joe Shekarchi steps down to pursue a seat on the Rhode Island Supreme Court.

The move could trigger one of the biggest leadership shakeups at the State House in recent years, with lawmakers already preparing for a possible transition in House leadership.

Questions raised over revolving door law

The potential appointment is also drawing scrutiny because of Rhode Island’s revolving door restrictions, which are designed to limit elected officials from quickly moving into positions connected to branches of government where they recently held power.

Critics and ethics observers have raised questions about whether Shekarchi’s appointment to the state’s highest court could violate the spirit, or potentially the letter, of those rules, given his current role as one of the most powerful lawmakers in Rhode Island government.

Others argue the move raises broader ethical concerns about political influence and judicial independence, particularly because the General Assembly plays a role in shaping the judicial selection process.

No formal ruling has been issued regarding the legality of a potential appointment.

Leadership transition expected

Shekarchi, a Democrat from Warwick, has served as House Speaker since 2021 and has been a dominant figure in state politics during his tenure.

Reports indicate Chris Blazejewski is viewed as a possible successor if Shekarchi formally steps down.

Massive campaign account remains question

Another major question surrounding Shekarchi’s departure is what happens to his political fundraising operation.

Shekarchi currently has roughly $4.7 million in campaign funds, the largest of any political campaign account in Rhode Island.

If he officially becomes a judicial nominee, judicial rules would bar him from using those funds for political activity.

Before reaching that stage, he could choose to return the money to donors, donate it to charity, transfer it to a new political action committee, or contribute it to candidates and other PACs within state campaign finance limits.

Supreme Court vacancy opens opportunity

The opening on the Rhode Island Supreme Court comes as state leaders prepare to fill a key vacancy on the bench.

Shekarchi has only a limited window to formally apply for consideration for the position.

If selected, the move would mark a dramatic transition from legislative leadership to one of the highest judicial posts in the state.
