Crane ship Thialf in Narragansett Bay

NEWPORT, R.I. — After turning heads and sparking plenty of complaints, the towering crane ship Thialf has officially left Rhode Island waters.

Standing 473 feet above sea level, the world’s second-largest crane ship dwarfed sailboats and cargo ships as it sat anchored in federal waters off the coast. For a week, it drew both curious onlookers and frustrated locals who called it an eyesore on the bay.

Thialf was in town for safety checks and a crew swap before continuing to New York, where it will play a major role in building an offshore wind project expected to power more than 500,000 homes.

Love it or hate it… did you catch a glimpse?
