PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police have released video footage of a person they believe is the Brown University shooting suspect (see below).
The suspect, wearing all black, is seen calmly walking down Hope Street and taking a right onto Waterman Avenue on Providence’s East Side. Both streets abut the campus.
The suspect is described as a male, who witnesses said appeared to be in his 20s. A handgun was used in the attack and has yet to be recovered.
Police briefly detained a person believed to be connected to the incident, but later determined the individual was not involved.
Officials noted that entry to the building usually requires a swipe card, but because exams were taking place that measure of security was temporarily suspended.
The shooting has resulted in two deaths and nine people in critical, though now stable, condition. All victims are students of the university.
Police were alerted to reports of an active shooter at the Rhode Island campus shortly after 4 p.m. The incident occurred inside a first-floor classroom at the Barus & Holley Engineering building while final exams were underway.
