The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is asking for the public’s help after rescuing over 50 animals from a Central Falls apartment.

On Monday afternoon, RISPCA staff removed 46 cats and four dogs from a Central Street residence. According to RISPCA President Wayne Kezirian, the animals were found living in deplorable conditions without access to food or water.

The rescue has more than doubled the number of cats currently in the organization’s care. Because the main Warwick shelter is already at capacity, the cats were transported to RISPCA’s East Providence facility.

The organization is now seeking monetary donations, pet supplies, cleaning products, and volunteers to help care for the animals. Donations can be made online, dropped off at the Warwick or East Providence shelters, or purchased through the RISPCA’s Amazon Wishlist.

Authorities believe the apartment where the animals were discovered may also be connected to the suspicious death of a 24-year-old woman currently under investigation.

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is the state’s leading organization dedicated to protecting, rescuing, and advocating for the welfare of animals. Founded in 1870, it is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the United States. Based in Warwick, Rhode Island, the RISPCA operates shelters, adoption centers, and humane law enforcement programs that investigate cases of animal cruelty and neglect across the state.

In addition to rescuing and rehoming animals, the RISPCA provides veterinary care, education programs, and community outreach aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership and preventing animal suffering. The organization frequently steps in to assist in large-scale rescues, such as hoarding situations or neglect cases, offering medical care and rehabilitation for animals in need.

Funded primarily through donations and volunteer support, the RISPCA relies on the generosity of the public to continue its mission. Whether through adoption, fostering, or financial contributions, Rhode Islanders play a key role in helping the RISPCA create a more compassionate community for animals and people alike.
