PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Al Fresco on the Hill will now run through Labor Day weekend after the Providence Board of Licenses voted to extend the popular outdoor dining event despite objections from some Federal Hill business owners.
The board had initially approved the event only for June while weighing concerns raised by several restaurant owners. Following additional discussion, members voted to allow the program to continue through the remainder of the summer.
The seasonal event, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic, transforms a portion of Atwells Avenue into a pedestrian-friendly outdoor dining and shopping destination. To accommodate the event, the city closes Atwells Avenue between Dean Street and Acorn Street on Saturdays.
For the past several years, Al Fresco on the Hill has operated on both Fridays and Saturdays. This year, the season is scheduled to begin June 13 and will take place only on Saturdays.
Supporters of the event say it helps attract visitors to Federal Hill and boosts business for participating restaurants and shops. Federal Hill Commerce Association President Rick Simone said more than 30 businesses are expected to take part this year.
Not all business owners support the program, however. Some told the board the road closures make it more difficult for customers to access their establishments and negatively affect sales during the summer months.
Several restaurant owners urged the board to limit or discontinue the event, arguing that the closures create congestion and present challenges for businesses that do not directly benefit from the outdoor dining setup.
Despite those concerns, board members ultimately determined that the event’s popularity and economic benefits justified allowing it to continue throughout the summer. Officials said the program remains a major attraction for both Rhode Islanders and visitors seeking the neighborhood’s signature outdoor dining experience.
