COVENTRY, R.I. — A Coventry man has been charged following an animal cruelty investigation that began after a severely malnourished dog was brought to the local pound in early January, according to authorities.
On Jan. 7, 2026, Coventry Animal Control launched an investigation after officers encountered a small, tan, adult female mixed-breed dog in extreme distress. Officials said the dog was visibly emaciated, lethargic, and unable to stand or walk, with signs of bleeding. Due to the severity of her condition, the dog was transported to a local veterinary clinic for emergency treatment.
During the investigation, officers learned that additional dogs were located at the residence where the animal had been living. Animal Control officers and members of the Coventry Police Department responded to the home and made contact with the homeowner, identified as Michael Beausoleil, 62, of Coventry.
Authorities said Beausoleil confirmed ownership of the adult dog and advised that four puppies were also inside the home. The puppies were taken into custody and transported to the veterinary clinic for evaluation.

Despite medical intervention, veterinary staff determined the adult dog’s condition was the result of prolonged and severe neglect. Due to the extent of her suffering, the dog was humanely euthanized. The four puppies were also found to be malnourished and dehydrated, but were able to receive treatment and survived. They were later placed in the care of Coventry Animal Control.
On Feb. 11, 2026, Beausoleil was arraigned in Kent County District Court, where he was formally charged with one felony count of unnecessary cruelty to animals resulting in death and four misdemeanor counts of unnecessary cruelty to animals. Following the court appearance, he was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and ordered by the court not to possess any dogs.
Authorities said the four puppies have since been successfully adopted.
