CRANSTON, R.I. — After more than 60 years at Garden City Center, the Newport Creamery location has officially closed its doors today, Sunday, December 28. Generations grew up here, Awful Awfuls, after-school stops, and late-night memories that became part of Garden City’s story.

The company said the shutdown followed WS Development’s decision not to renew the lease, leaving the longtime Cranston restaurant with no way to remain at the Garden City plaza.

For generations, the Garden City Newport Creamery has been a staple for Awful Awfuls, family meals, post-practice treats, and milestone celebrations. Newport Creamery stressed that the choice to vacate was not its own and thanked customers for more than 60 years of loyal support and memories.

The company also emphasized that it is not going out of business. Its nine other locations throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts will continue operating, including restaurants in Middletown, Warwick, Providence, Barrington, Coventry, Smithfield, North Kingstown, Fall River, and Seekonk.

Workers from the Cranston store are expected to be offered jobs at other Newport Creamery locations. The company said it looks forward to continuing to serve Cranston-area customers at nearby restaurants and carrying on the traditions Rhode Islanders have come to cherish.

Thank you for the memories.
