Two Rhode Island finalists named for 2026 James Beard Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Two Rhode Island establishments have been named finalists for the 2026 James Beard Awards, highlighting the state’s growing presence on the national food scene.

The James Beard Foundation announced this year’s finalists on Tuesday, recognizing top talent across the country in categories ranging from emerging bars to leading chefs.

Providence bar earns national recognition

Loma, a Providence-based bar, was selected as a finalist for Best New Bar, a category that honors standout beverage-focused businesses that opened between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025.

The award recognizes excellence in drinks, service, hospitality, and overall experience, as well as the potential for long-term impact.

Loma is competing against finalists in cities including New York, Detroit, Boise, and Oklahoma City.

Local chef among Northeast’s best

Providence chef Derek Wagner, of Nicks on Broadway, was named a finalist for Best Chef: Northeast.

The category includes top chefs from across the region, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. It honors culinary excellence, leadership, and efforts to create a strong and sustainable restaurant culture.
