WARWICK, R.I. — Drivers who use Jefferson Boulevard to access I-95 South should prepare for a long-term change. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) says the on-ramp from Jefferson Boulevard to I-95 South will close Friday night, January 16, as construction begins on a full bridge replacement.

The ramp is expected to remain closed through the summer of 2027 while crews replace the bridge that carries I-95 over Jefferson Boulevard. RIDOT says the work will be done in phases to reduce impacts on traffic along the heavily traveled interstate.

During the closure, drivers heading to I-95 South from Jefferson Boulevard should follow signs to the Airport Connector outbound on-ramp, located about half a mile south near Kilvert Street and Coronado Road. RIDOT has posted detour maps online to help drivers navigate the change.
The project is part of RIDOT’s larger I-95 15 Bridges Project, a $770 million effort aimed at rebuilding aging infrastructure along I-95 and Route 10 between Providence and Warwick. The initiative targets 15 bridges, including several classified as structurally deficient, and also includes a complete redesign of the Route 10–I-95 interchange at the Huntington Viaduct.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, expect ongoing traffic pattern changes, and allow extra time when traveling through the area.
