JOHNSTON, R.I. — Johnston Senior High School is working to replace about 125 copies of its 2025-2026 yearbook after a spelling error was found before the books were distributed to students.
The typo appeared on the spine of the yearbook. Instead of reading “Johnston Senior High School,” it was printed as “Johnston Senior High Shool.”
Superintendent Scott Sutherland said Treering, the company that printed the yearbook, was responsible for the error.
In a letter to families, Sutherland said the district is working to fix the issue before students receive their copies.
“We are currently working directly with the yearbook company and other local vendors to ensure the issue is corrected before any yearbooks are distributed to students,” Sutherland wrote.
According to Sutherland, the school’s yearbook club reviewed a digital proof and a sample copy before the publication was sent to print. However, he said the proof provided to the school did not show the spine, where the typo appeared.
Treering disputed that account.
In a statement, the company said the spine was visible in both the digital and printed proofs provided to the school before production began.
“The school reviewed and approved both before the book went to print,” a Treering spokesperson said. “The yearbook was printed exactly as the school’s editorial team approved it.”
School officials said they are continuing to work with the company to determine the next steps.
Because students prepaid for the yearbook, Sutherland said it is not yet clear whether there will be any additional cost to correct and reprint the books.
For now, the yearbooks have not been distributed while the district works to resolve the issue.
