PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police say a man who was critically injured during an alleged assault on Manton Avenue has died.

Authorities say officers responded to Manton Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of an assault. The victim, identified as 51-year-old Romy Alfonso, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died. Providence police Col. Oscar Perez confirmed the death Friday.

Investigators say witnesses reported that multiple juveniles attacked the man, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly striking him.

Police say four juveniles were taken into custody later that day. Authorities describe the group as three 12-year-olds and one 11-year-old. Three of the juveniles were initially detained in connection with a separate disturbance before being linked to the assault.

The juveniles have been charged with felony assault and conspiracy, and are being held at the Rhode Island Training School.
