According to newly released federal court records, investigators believe Claudio Neves-Valente transported a firearm and ammunition across state lines in connection with deadly shootings in Providence, Rhode Island and Brookline, Massachusetts.

Federal authorities say Neves-Valente, a former Brown University student and current Florida resident, traveled to Massachusetts in late November 2025, staying in Boston-area hotels and renting a gray Nissan Sentra. Investigators say license plate readers later detected the vehicle multiple times near the Brown University campus.

On December 13, a gunman opened fire during a study session at Brown University, killing two students and injuring nine others. Rhode Island authorities later issued homicide charges, followed by a federal warrant for unlawful flight from prosecution.

According to court documents, the following evening an MIT professor was shot and killed inside his home in Brookline. Digital evidence reviewed by investigators places Neves-Valente in the area around the time of that shooting. Surveillance footage also captured a vehicle matching the rental car nearby, later seen with a fraudulent Maine license plate.

Investigators say Neves-Valente and the Brookline victim previously attended the same university in Portugal during the same time period. Ballistics analysis determined that while both shootings involved 9mm ammunition, they were not fired from the same firearm.

Federal prosecutors allege Neves-Valente knowingly transported firearms and ammunition across state lines with intent to commit violent felonies. The investigation remains ongoing.
