Two familiar faces from the 2014 Newport Gulls championship team helped the Dodgers win the 2025 World Series.

Will Smith, who caught for the Gulls during the 2014 season, hit a clutch home run in the 11th inning to seal the Dodgers’ 2025 World Series victory. The Kentucky native played 15 games for Newport that summer before becoming one of MLB’s premier catchers. Since his days at Cardines Field, Smith has gone on to win three World Series titles (2020, 2024, 2025) with the Dodgers.

His former teammate Tommy Edman was also a key part of the 2014 Gulls NECBL championship run, where he was named an All-Star and best defensive player. After starring at Stanford, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016 and made his MLB debut in 2019. In 2024, Edman joined the Dodgers where his consistency and defensive prowess helped secure last year’s World Series win.

From Cardines Field to the World Series, two Newport Gulls alumni continue to make Rhode Island proud.

The Newport Gulls are one of the most successful and beloved teams in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), representing the city of Newport, Rhode Island. Founded in 2001, the Gulls have built a strong reputation for excellence both on and off the field, winning multiple NECBL championships and developing future Major League Baseball talent.

Home games are played at Cardines Field, one of the oldest baseball parks in the country, located in downtown Newport. The stadium’s unique charm, combined with passionate local support, has made Gulls games a summer tradition for residents and visitors alike.
