Flood watch issued for northern Rhode Island into Wednesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Northern Rhode Island flood watch is in effect through Wednesday evening as heavy rain and potential thunderstorms could bring widespread rainfall and localized flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters expect 1 to 2 inches of rain, with isolated areas receiving up to 3 inches.

The National Weather Service warned that excessive runoff could flood rivers, streams, creeks, roadways, and other low-lying or flood-prone areas. Urban locations and neighborhoods with poor drainage may also experience flooding.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and remain alert for possible Flood Warnings. People living in flood-prone areas should be prepared to act quickly if flooding develops.

Safety Tips During Flooding

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people to turn around and find an alternate route if they encounter floodwaters. Residents should move to higher ground if flooding develops and use extra caution when driving at night, when it can be more difficult to recognize flooded roadways and other hazards. Drivers are also encouraged to move their vehicles away from streams and other flood-prone areas before water begins to rise.

The CDC also warns residents not to drive through flooded roads or ignore posted warning signs. Motorists should never drive around barricades because floodwaters may have washed away the road beneath the surface. Officials also advise against unnecessary travel during flooding unless you are under an evacuation order or your trip is essential.
