NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. —  A rare underwater encounter in Rhode Island waters has been shared by the Atlantic Shark Institute.

According to the institute, Executive Director Jon Dodd captured underwater photos and video of a great white shark feeding on a 40-foot humpback whale several miles southeast of Block Island. The whale was located after an extensive search covering nearly 50 square miles, allowing researchers from the Atlantic Shark Institute and Mystic Aquarium to collect valuable samples while documenting the shark feeding on the carcass.

Just a few days later, the whale washed ashore on Crescent Beach on Block Island with numerous shark bite marks, bringing the unusual series of events to an end.
