PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Members of the Blackstone Valley co-op hockey team received a powerful surprise when Patrice Bergeron arrived at their postseason gathering carrying the Stanley Cup.

The visit took place at Saint Raphael Academy, where players, families, and coaches had gathered for a brunch to celebrate the season. What began as a routine event quickly turned into an emotional and unforgettable moment.

Stanley Cup moment for local players

Bergeron, longtime captain of the Boston Bruins and a 2011 Stanley Cup champion, walked in with the trophy, stunning everyone in the room.

Players rushed to take photos and spend time with the Cup, creating a moment few will ever forget.

A season marked by tragedy and resilience

The visit carried deeper meaning given what the team endured this year.

Blackstone Valley won the Rhode Island Division II state championship in March with a dramatic four-overtime victory. That title run came just weeks after a tragic shooting during a senior night game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena.

The violence claimed the lives of three family members of player Colin Dorgan, including his mother, brother, and grandfather, leaving a lasting impact on the team and community.

Bergeron inspired by team and community

Bergeron said he was moved by how the team and the wider community came together in support of Dorgan during an incredibly difficult time.

He praised the players for their strength and unity, pointing to their ability to rally around one another as a powerful example of what sports can represent beyond the game.

More than just a hockey moment

Coaches said the team continues to process the emotional weight of the season even after winning a championship. The brunch, and Bergeron’s visit, offered a moment to reflect, heal, and celebrate together.

For a group bonded through both heartbreak and success, the day served as a reminder of resilience, and the support surrounding them.
