PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Providence man has been arrested and charged with making death threats against President Donald Trump and other high-ranking federal officials, Acting U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island Sara Miron Bloom announced Wednesday.
Carl D. Montague, 37, was discovered hiding in his bathtub when federal agents arrived at his apartment to question him, according to an affidavit filed in support of his arrest. Before the agents could even introduce themselves or explain their presence, Montague began confessing, court documents state.
Prosecutors say that on June 27, Montague posted a profanity-laced threat on Trump’s Truth Social account, in which he threatened to shoot and kill the president. He allegedly made similar threats against U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, according to a statement from Bloom’s office.
Montague is facing multiple federal charges, including:
• Threats against the President
• Interstate threats
• Threats to assault, kidnap, or murder a U.S. official, judge, or law enforcement officer
Authorities said he was arrested without incident on Wednesday morning. He was scheduled to appear before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Amy E. Moses at 1 p.m. that same day.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and the Providence Police Department, according to federal prosecutors.
