Rhode Island’s overall credit card debt among lowest in U.S.

While Americans collectively carry a staggering $1.32 trillion in credit card debt, not every state is driving the surge. A new WalletHub analysis shows Rhode Island ranked 43rd out of 50 states overall for credit card debt increases from the first to second quarter of 2025. The study considered factors such as average household credit card debt, the quarterly increase per household, total statewide credit card debt, and the overall increase across the state’s population.

Rhode Island (#43):
 •    Average household credit card debt: $11,121
•. Quarter 1 to Quarter 2 increase: $211 per household
•    Total credit card debt combined: $4.38 billion
•    Total credit card debt increase Quarter 1 to Quarter 2: $92.3 million

By comparison, California topped the list with a household increase of $263 and a statewide surge of more than $3.5 billion, while Wyoming ranked last with only about a $46 million uptick.

Massachusetts (#15):
 •    Average household credit card debt: $11,515

•    Total credit card debt combined: $28.6 billion
•    Total credit card debt increase Quarter 1 to Quarter 2: $604.4 million

Connecticut (#27):
 •    Average household credit card debt: $12,549
•. Quarter 1 to Quarter 2 increase: $238 per household
•    Total credit card debt combined: $16 billion
•    Total credit card debt increase Quarter 1 to Quarter 2: $338.7 million

New Hampshire (#41):
 •    Average household credit card debt: $11,333
•. Quarter 1 to Quarter 2 increase: $215 per household
•    Total credit card debt combined: $5.6 billion
•    Total credit card debt increase Quarter 1 to Quarter 2: $118.7 million

Maine (#42):
 •    Average household credit card debt: $9,615
•. Quarter 1 to Quarter 2 increase: $183 per household
•    Total credit card debt combined: $5.1 billion
•    Total credit card debt increase Quarter 1 to Quarter 2: $107.6 million

Vermont (#49):
 •    Average household credit card debt: $9,765
•. Quarter 1 to Quarter 2 increase: $185 per household
•    Total credit card debt combined: $2.3 billion
•    Total credit card debt increase Quarter 1 to Quarter 2: $49.9 million
