PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island House has approved legislation aimed at protecting household pets in domestic abuse cases.
The bill (2026-H 7133A), introduced by Rep. John J. Lombardi, would allow Family Court to include pets in protective orders for victims of domestic abuse.
Lawmakers say the measure is designed to address situations where animals are threatened, harmed or used to control victims during abusive relationships.
Under the legislation, Family Court would have the authority to grant possession of a household pet to the victim in a domestic abuse case. The court could also enforce that decision through restraining orders or other legal protections.
Supporters of the bill say pets are often caught in the middle of abusive situations and should be included in legal protections to ensure both the victim and the animal are safe.
The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration.
