Bay View athletic director arrested on Florida warrant

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The athletic director at St. Mary Academy Bay View has been terminated following his arrest Wednesday afternoon in East Providence.

John Sung was taken into custody inside the school’s administration building. A spokesperson for the school, Gregg Perry said Sung was removed from his role as director of athletics and strategic programs mere hours after the arrest.

According to East Providence police, Sung was taken in on an extraditable warrant issued by Broward County, Florida. Perry noted that the case involves a “nonviolent felony and property-related offense.”

Court records from Broward County show Sung is facing charges from 2023 of communications fraud in excess of $50,000 and second-degree grand theft involving amounts between $20,000 and $100,000.

In a report, detectives allege that Sung, a former assistant and interim athletics director at Nova Southeastern University, reimbursed himself for athletic equipment he never purchased. Sung joined the university in April 2023 and was later terminated for an unrelated administrative matter.

The investigation began in March 2025 during an audit of certain departmental expenses dating back to May 2023. The report indicates that Sung submitted reimbursement requests for a variety of athletic equipment. After his termination, the athletics department could not locate the equipment he claimed to have purchased.

According to the report, Sung was reimbursed nearly $58,000. When authorities contacted the businesses listed on the invoices, they found no records of the alleged purchases. Investigators allege that Sung created fake invoices for the equipment while also submitting reimbursements for legitimate purchases he had made for the university. It also claims that Sung used the reimbursed funds for personal expenses.

Bay View hired Sung in August, and Perry said he passed all background and reference checks at the time.

Sung is being held at the ACI without bail as a fugitive from justice while he awaits his extradition hearing. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 21.
