PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Authorities have identified a suspect in the deadly shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured, and an arrest warrant has been issued, according to law enforcement sources.

The suspect, whose name has not been publicly released, is accused of opening fire inside a Brown University classroom Saturday afternoon before fleeing into surrounding Providence neighborhoods. Despite an intensive, multi-agency search, the suspect remained at large for nearly six days.

Sources say investigators are now examining whether the Brown University shooting may be connected to the killing of an MIT professor in Brookline, Massachusetts. Detectives working both cases began sharing information in recent days, leading authorities to explore overlapping evidence as part of a joint investigation.

The MIT victim, Nuno F. G. Loureiro, 47, was a nationally recognized nuclear physicist and director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. He was found shot inside his Brookline home Monday night and later died at a hospital. No motive has been publicly identified in either case.

During the Brown investigation, authorities released surveillance images of a person of interest and held multiple briefings, though details remained limited as the case developed.

Officials have not confirmed the nature of the possible connection or announced when the suspect may be taken into custody. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
