PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University President Christina H. Paxson has announced she will step down at the end of the 2026–2027 academic year, bringing her 15-year tenure as the university’s leader to a close.
Paxson, who has served as Brown’s president since 2012, said Brown is in a strong position for new leadership and believes now is the right time for the university’s next president to develop and carry out its next long-term strategic vision.
Brown’s governing Corporation will begin a nationwide search for the university’s 20th president while Paxson remains in office through the end of the next academic year to help ensure a smooth transition.
During her presidency, Brown expanded its research programs, increased access to financial aid and higher education, and guided the university through several significant challenges facing colleges and universities.
Her tenure also included the tragic campus shooting in December 2025 that left two students dead and several others injured. In the aftermath of the shooting, Paxson faced criticism from some members of the public over the university’s response, including questions about her knowledge of the class that was in session when the shooting occurred. The incident sparked widespread discussion about the university’s emergency response and leadership during the crisis.
Paxson will continue serving as president through the conclusion of the 2026–2027 academic year before Brown transitions to new leadership.
