BOSTON, M.A. — Former Providence College standout Devin Carter is returning to New England after signing a training camp contract with the Boston Celtics.
Carter spent two seasons with the Friars after beginning his college career at South Carolina. He saved his best season for his last at Providence, averaging 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists during the 2023-24 season while earning BIG EAST Player of the Year honors.
His success at Providence helped make him the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings.
Carter spent his first two NBA seasons with Sacramento before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks this summer and later waived. He has appeared in 74 NBA games during his young career.
Now, the 24-year-old guard gets a fresh opportunity in Boston.
The deal is a training-camp contract, so a spot on the Celtics’ regular-season roster isn’t guaranteed. Carter is expected to compete for a two-way spot, although earning a standard NBA roster spot remains a possibility.
There’s another New England connection, too. Before Providence College, Carter spent part of his high school career at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.
For Friars fans, it’s a familiar face getting another chance close to home going from starring at the AMP in Providence to fighting for a spot with the Celtics just up I-95.
