PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Former President Barack Obama has endorsed Democratic candidate Helena Foulkes for Rhode Island governor.

In a statement released Wednesday, Obama praised Foulkes for her commitment to protecting the Affordable Care Act and making healthcare more affordable.

“I’m proud to support Helena Foulkes for Governor of Rhode Island. With cruelty and chaos coming from the Republicans in Washington, Rhode Islanders need a strong Democratic governor to push back, and one with bold ideas to make life better for people. And with continued attacks trying to undermine the Affordable Care Act, it is critical that she wins this race; she’s the only candidate who will defend the ACA and help families afford healthcare,” said President Obama.

Foulkes said she was “thrilled and honored” to receive his support as the November 3 election approaches.
