NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A 69-year-old Lincoln woman has died after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday night in North Providence.

Police say the incident happened Wednesday around 4:45 p.m. at Garfield Street and Mineral Spring Avenue. Officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck and found the woman seriously injured.

The victim has been identified as Susan Biggins of Lincoln. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

According to investigators, a 21-year-old driver was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved. Surveillance footage from the area reportedly shows the woman had fallen into the roadway, and the driver was unable to see her lying in the street before the collision.

Police say the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators. At this time, no charges have been filed, though authorities are seeking a search warrant for the driver’s phone to confirm it was not being used at the time.

While police say snowbanks or snow-covered sidewalks do not appear to have directly contributed to the crash, parts of North Providence are still dealing with large snowbanks from the recent blizzard some over four feet high and sidewalks that remain unshoveled.

Officials also remind residents that property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks next to their homes and businesses to help keep pedestrians safe.

The crash remains under investigation.
