PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Providence massage parlor is at the center of a major criminal investigation after authorities say it was being used for prostitution and money laundering.
According to Rhode Island State Police, Smilers Day Spa on North Main Street was raided Thursday following a months-long investigation that began back in October after a tip about suspected illegal activity.
Investigators say the business was allegedly operating as a commercial sex operation, with money generated from those activities then being funneled through financial systems to conceal its origins. Authorities also allege that women connected to the operation were living full-time inside the leased property.
State police say five individuals are now facing various felony charges. They include:
• Larry Chow, 65, of Norwich, Connecticut
• Naja Ho, 70, of Lincoln, Rhode Island
• Monica Chow, 33, of Lincoln, Rhode Island
• Yong Kim, 67, of Flushing, New York
• Haiyue Cui, 30, of Lincoln, Rhode Island
As part of the investigation, detectives conducted undercover operations, surveillance, and executed more than 50 search warrants tied to financial records, cash apps, and bank accounts.
Authorities estimate that between 25 and 40 men were visiting the spa each day.
During Thursday’s coordinated operation, law enforcement agencies including the FBI, IRS, and multiple local departments assisted in carrying out search warrants. Investigators say approximately $82,000 in cash was seized.
Officials also confirmed that four suspected victims were identified and provided with housing, counseling, and medical support.
This is not the first time the location has drawn attention. Previous investigations into alleged prostitution activity at the same business were reported in 2017 and 2019.
The investigation remains ongoing.
