Wally’s on Federal Hill is officially open

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Wally’s on Federal Hill opened its doors last night for a sneak peek at what they’re serving up. For those of us who loved The Old Canteen, this was a bittersweet experience.

That beloved red-sauce institution left behind decades of memories, and stepping into Wally’s brought a wave of nostalgia. The back bar remains mostly the same, anchored by a glowing, retro-inspired Old Canteen sign, along with the vintage hanging Budweiser sign, a thoughtful tribute that carries the spirit of the past into the present.

Throughout the space, old photos, menus, and mementos from The Old Canteen remind guests of what came before. While the new restaurant doesn’t try to replicate it entirely, it respects its legacy.

Wally’s brings its own identity with bold burgers, hot dogs, and standout espresso martinis. If you’ve been to their Newport Wally’s Wiener location, this one has a familiar vibe.

No, it’s not The Old Canteen, but the staff was fantastic, the food was delicious, and we’ll definitely be back to relive the memories.
